What is a tango practica?

A tango practica is an event where tango practice and related discussions can be conducted without the formalities of milonga etiquette – teaching whilst on milonga dance floor is frowned upon. The informality of a tango practica allows dancers to experience tango in a setting where i) the ronda is not strictly required, ii) teaching on the dancefloor is permissible, iii) dancers can stop and start dancing as they need, iv) conversation on the dancefloor is permitted, v) cabaceo is encouraged but verbal invitations to dance are okay.

The rules of a milonga are a lot more strict.

Milonga RulesPractica Rules
Dancers must move together in the counter-clockwise direction of a ronda, no exceptions. If there is a ronda, must also be counter-clockwise. Different areas of the practica will suit stationary practise.
Teaching or instructing dance partners on the dance floor is impolite. At practica, dancers are there to learn.
Tango is a walking dance. Dancers need to keep the line of dance in the ronda. Stopping mid- dance forces dancers behind you to also stop. There is a greater expectation that the dancers around you will start/stop. Practica dancers therefore should make more allowances for unpredictable movements on the dance floor.
Talking on the milonga dance floor is restricted to the time in between songs.Talking whilst the music is playing is permitted if it stalls the continuation of a bad dance.
Offering or accepting a dance with a partner by inviting with the eyes – using cabaceo – is the goal.Cabaceo is preferred, but verbal invitations to dance are okay. Sneaking up on people and putting hands on them is not cool; don’t do it.
